Starvation mode is commonly known element for weight lose but is it really a thing ? Starvation Mode is a theory according to which when we stave ourselves by not eating adequate amount of calories our bodies start to store calories rather than getting rid of them. So, as a result we start to gain weight instead of reducing it. But the question arises that is it actually happening or is it just a story use to stop people from starving themselves and putting their health in danger.
According to Holly F. Lofton, director of medical weight management program at NYU Longone Medical Center, It’s true and our bodies actually go into starvation mode. It is not a myth or a lie it a simple physiological response which is completely natural.
This is a process by which our bodies store calories for future use when proper food resources are not available but is make weight lose struggle even more difficult for people
who are already putting in too much effort and energy into it. It not only effect the daily calorie burn but also make a person stressful which leads to weight gain.
“Adaptive thermogenesis” is the scientific term for starvation mode and when we try to reduce weight by cutting down calories, no matter how carefully our diet plan is made and followed, our bodies experience this at some level which definitely effect out weight lose progress also called metabolic adaptation or metabolic damage.
The amount of calories we use to burn while performing our everyday tasks and workout reduces, as a result of starvation mode our bodies start burning lesser calories than usual. We obviously need energy to function and when we are not getting it from food our hypothalamus and glands start storing calories for future use from proper functioning.
Reducing 500 calories per day from our usual normal calorie intake slows our metabolism and it slows down even more if we cut down more than 500. So, the lesser calories we take it make our metabolism slower.
For women taking less than 1200 calories is extremely unhealthy and result into many adverse effects like hair lose, low body temperature, high stress level and slow metabolism.
Fortunately, it is possible to stop our bodies from going into starvation mode or metabolic adaptation. The steps we can take are:
- Increasing our protein intake, in this way our muscle will not get affected while reducing weight.
- Focusing more on strength training to build up more muscle while reducing weight.
- Keep taking breaks from your diet plan it will keep your body out of starvation mode, just try to maintain your weight during the break.
Our weight lose should not be at the stake of our health and should not damage our metabolism, happy, safe and healthy weight lose is more important.
